Twitter

Twitter

About
Twitter is a privately funded startup with offices in the SoMA neighborhood of San Francisco, CA. Started as a side project in March of 2006, Twitter has grown into a real-time short messaging service that works over multiple networks and devices. Twitter was funded initially by Obvious, a creative environment in San Francisco, CA. The first prototype was built in two weeks in March 2006 and launched publicly in August of 2006. The service grew popular very quickly and Twitter moved outside of Obvious. In May 2007, Twitter Incorporated was founded.

Review
Twitter is a good way to communicate with many people at once in real time. Tweets are limited to 140 characters so knowledge of text abbreviations is helpful. One may tweet from a cell phone or computer. Older tweens may be allowed to tweet by their parents. Tweets count as text messages on one's phone bill, however, so discretion is required. Twitter has proved to be an excellent tool for worldwide grassroots communication. For example, after the shutdown of the media in Iran after last spring's "elections," much of the information coming out of that country, came via twitter. But, mostly, it's Facebook for people with really short attention spans (like tweens).

Genre: Website, Social Networking
Warnings: Tweets are notoriously unedited.

Twitter is very attractive to tweens who can afford digital media devices.

It's stated purpose is to give people the power to share and make the world more open and connected. It is currently headquartered in Palo Alto, California.

Review
Facebook is open to anyone 13 and up. However, facebook does not actively enforce this age limit. Facebook is a site for people to share thoughts, news, photos and videos. It is not heavy on graphics. Communication is the goal. One may post for all their friends to see, or post on another person's wall. Facebook is the preferred social networking site for grown-ups. It is experiencing an increase in popularity with tweens. Facebook is one of the rare examples where grown-ups were out ahead of the curve before tweens. I have a facebook page and love it!

My Space

My Space.com

About
MySpace is one of the world’s largest social networks, with about 125 million users. Originally inspired by Friendster, MySpace quickly grew to become the world’s largest social network, before being overtaken by Facebook. User pages are highly customizable and support integration with widgets such as Slide or YouTube. MySpace provides users with a way to connect around content and culture. MySpace was started as a side project of the internet marketing company eUniverse (now called Intermix Media) in August 2003. Brad Greenspan, then founder and CEO of eUniverse oversaw the project, which was also led by Chris DeWolfe (later CEO), Josh Berman, and Tom Anderson. It officially launched in January 2004 and went through a major redesign in 2007. Its headquarters are in Beverly Hills, California, where it shares an office building with its immediate owner, Fox Interactive Media, which is owned by News Corporation.

Review
MySpace has many features which are particularly attractive to tweens. It has moods, Blurbs, blogs, multimedia, "About Me," "I'd Like to Meet," and "Interests." Videos and flash-based content can be included. Users also have the option to add music to their profile pages via MySpace Music, a service that allows bands to post songs for use on MySpace. MySpace allows users to decorate their profiles using HTML and Cascading Style Sheets. The same capacity to personalize one's page also creates the potential for a very cluttered and busy appearance. MySpace can be a very dangerous place for tweens as there are grown people (who should know better) on the site posting unsavory content for all to see. There is an age restriction of 14 and up on MySpace. But the site does not actively enforce this age restriction. People over 18 are not supposed to be able to view the pages of those 14 and 15 years of age. However, anyone (be they 12 or 32) can set up a page claiming to be 14 years old.

Genre: Website, Social Networking
Warnings: Sexual content, language, perfect for predators

Target Audience: Age 14 and up

MySpace tends to be extremely popular with tweens and teens as it's easy to personalize and there are lots of graphics, videos and music.

Pandora is based on the Music Genome Project, the most sophisticated taxonomy of musical information ever collected. It represents over eight years of analysis by a trained team of musicologists. Each song in the Music Genome Project is analyzed using up to 400 distinct musical characteristics by a trained music analyst. These attributes capture not only the musical identity of a song, but also the many significant qualities that are relevant to understanding the musical preferences of listeners. The typical music analyst working on the Music Genome Project has a four-year degree in music theory, composition or performance. To qualify for the work, analysts must have a firm grounding in music theory, including familiarity with a wide range of styles and sounds. All analysis is done on location. The Music Genome Project's database is built using a methodology that includes the use of precisely defined terminology, a consistent frame of reference, redundant analysis, and ongoing quality control to ensure that data integrity remains reliably high. Pandora does not use machine-listening or other forms of automated data extraction. The Music Genome Project is updated on a continual basis with the latest releases, emerging artists, and an ever-deepening collection of catalogue titles. By utilizing the wealth of musicological information stored in the Music Genome Project, Pandora recognizes and responds to each individual's tastes.

Fruits Basket tends to be more intellectual than most manga series. There is comedy, drama, heartbreak, angst, romance and action. The characters are easy to relate to for tweens. Spirits begin to swirl around the park and she is forced to work for the witch Yubaba, the owner of the park's bathhouse. She is put to work bathing and serving the most difficult spirits in the bathhouse. She is rewarded by a river spirit who has been heavily polluted, with a gift of medicine. She later uses this medicine to treat Haku who has been injured in his dragon form by Zeniba, Yubaba's sister. But Haku is still comatose. Chihiro travels to Zeniba's home to return a talisman belonging to her that haku had stolen in hopes that she will cure him. Zeniba informs Chihiro that her friendship and caring have cured her friend. As they return to the bathhouse, Chihiro realizes that Haku is a river spirit who saved her from drowning years earlier. This realization breaks the curse holding him to Yubaba. For Chihiro to be released from the witch, she must correctly identify which of a herd of pigs are her parents. When she correctly identifies that none are, she is released. Haku escorts her to the edge of the Spirit World and tells her her family is waiting on the other side. She returns to the car with her family, but she will never be the same.

Critical Evaluation
This series of books is based on the movie Spirited Away by Hayao Miyazaki. The illustrations are by Miyazaki. The story functions on multiple levels. On one level, it is a coming of age story as Chihiro must learn to overcome self-centered childishness and serve and help others. After her journey, she is not the same. She has made the transition to the next phase of her life. On another level, the story functions as social commentary about consumption, materialism and pollution. On yet another level, it is merely a wonderfully engaging story. Miyazaki is a master animator and his illustrations are beautiful.

Readers Annotation

The Absolutely True Diary of a Part Time Indian

The Absolutely True Diary of a Part Time Indian by Alexie Sherman
Sherman, A. (2007). The absolutely true diary of a part time Indian. New York: Little Brown.
ISBN: 142876450X

Plot
Arnold Spirit is a young person growing up on the Spokane Indian Reservation. Life there is hard. People are poor, alcoholism is rampant and death often comes at too early an age. Arnold was born with a condition he calls "water on the brain" which makes him susceptible to head injuries. Arnold becomes disenchanted with the quality of education he is receiving on the rez. Encouraged by a white teacher, he makes a bold decision to attend high school in town. He is looked at as a traitor by his people. His best friend Rowdy won't talk to him. People shun him. At the white high school, he is treated as an outsider. He is between two worlds. Arnold makes a couple new friends and goes out for the basketball team. The big game is against his old high school from the rez with their star player, Rowdy. When Arnold beats Rowdy for a lay-up, Rowdy whacks him in the back of the head, where he is most vulnerable! There is more sadness for Arnold as his sister dies in a fire and his grandmother is killed by a drunk driver. Arnold struggles to come to terms with the contradictory nature of his life.

Critical Evaluation
For all it's sadness, this is a delightful coming of age story. The character of Arnold is funny and thoughtful. His feelings are conveyed through his drawings and his narrative. One of the ironic things about this book is that, in order to find and express his true self, Arnold must leave his tribal home. To remain on the rez, would be to capitulate before a dead-end future. This is an excellent story for tweens. The humor is typical of the age group, yet there is depth and sorrow in the choices Arnold must make to preserve himself. This book is based on the author's life.

Readers Annotation
This is the wonderful story of a poor boy named Arnold growing up on an Indian Reservation who chooses to better his life. Death and danger surround him on the reservation, but what will happen when he ventures out into the white world to attend their high school? A Lion's Hunger: Poems of First Love

Plot
This is a book of poems by one author that tells the story of first love. A girl meets a boy in September. By October, they are in love. The story progresses through the months of the year as seen through the girl's eyes. She documents each new discovery and thrill in her poems. As their love grows deeper, they experiment together. Unfortunately, they experiment with drinking and driving and are in an accident. They are told that they are lucky to be alive and are forbidden to see each other again. She longs for him and grieves for the relationship. They share secret moments, but the accident has damaged something that cannot be repaired.

Critical Evaluation
The poems are written in free verse. There is clarity in the sparseness of words. The feelings of first love are described in searing simplicity. The reader can easily relate to the desperate pangs of longing and joy that tweens experience while falling in love for the first time. This story is also a cautionary tale. When the two young sweethearts make the mistake of drinking and driving and are involved in an accident, the consequences are severe both from external sources and the emotional toll internally. "Somehow that accident smashed something inside, hurt something I did not know could be hurt." This is a well put-together journey through first love with obvious appeal to tweens.

Readers Annotation
If you've ever been in love, desperately, wonderfully in love, you must read this book. We meet a young couple who experience first love together through the seasons. No one can understand what they are feeling. When a terrible accident happens... can their love be saved?

Wicked Poems

Wicked Poems edited by Roger McGough
McGough, R. (2004). Wicked poems. London: Bloomsbury Publishing Plc
ISBN: 0747561958

Plot
The poems in this book share the theme of wickedness. Some are scary like Unstable Mable by Brian Patten: "Her eyes are ablaze, like cinders, like fire, And her dark hair is tangled like razor sharp wire." Some are tragically poignantly like The Stones by Brendan Kelly in which an old woman is mistaken for an imaginary creature used by parents to scare their children into obedience. The children "Stalking the little weary traveller -- Ten, twenty, thirty, forty. Numbers gave them courage..." stone the old woman. Some are merely fun like By the Pricking of My Thumbs by George Szirtes: "By the pricking of my thumbs, Something wicked this way comes." All are enjoyable.

This is an excellent collection of wicked poems by poets past and present. The content is varied, but the theme maintained. This would be an excellent book to recommend at Halloween. The subject matter is perfect for tweens.

The Rose That Grew From Concrete

The Rose That Grew From Concrete by Tupac Shakur
Shakur, T. (1999). The rose that grew from concrete. New York: Pocket Books
ISBN: 0671028448

Plot
Poems handwritten in notebooks from the time he was 19 by Tupac Shakur are reproduced here. These 72 poems encapsulate the life of Shakur who was murdered in 1996. The poems examine love, life, dreams, conflict, hate and death. The book ends eerily with the poem In the Event of My Demise.

Critical Evaluation
These poems are a window into a soul struggling to make sense of a violent, imperfect world.  Some are sweet and innocent about love. Others are prophetic such as In the Event of My Demise with the words: "I hope I die for a principle or a belief that I had lived 4. I will die before my time, Because I feel the Shadow's Depth." Tupac Shakur's murder was, of course, senseless. Shakur writes in a language that older tweens will be able to relate to. Hopefully they learn a lesson about senseless violence when they reflect upon how his voice was silenced.

Readers Annotation
Tupac Shakur's most honest and intimate thoughts were not uncovered until after his death. Handwritten journals were found containing his poetry. The 72 poems reproduced here represent a window into his complicated, often contradictory, world. They are a deeply personal portrait of a talented recording artist and actor whose time on this earth was ended too soon.

About the Author
Tupac Shakur (1971-1996) was an American rap artist. He has sold over 75 million albums. Shakur was also a gifted actor who appeared in 7 major motion pictures. He was a social activist and his work promoted economic, social and civil rights. Shakur was shot on the night of September 7, 1996 in Las Vegas. He died 6 days later, another victim of the mindless East Coast-West Coast hip hop rivalry.

Genre: Poetry
Curriculum Ties: Language Arts, Social Studies
Booktalk Ideas: Did Tupac's death have meaning?
Reading Level: Grade 7+
Interest Level: Grade 7+
Challenge Issues: Tupac and rap are controversial. This book is not. It is surprisingly thoughtful and sweet.

This book is included because Tupac is a well known rap figure to many tweens. His legend has grown since his death. I want tweens reading poetry. Some who may not otherwise open a book of verse, may open this book.
